New Member: Fostoria Area Historical Society

Welcome new member, Fostoria Area Historical Society!

Driven by a mission to foster appreciation for Fostoria’s heritage, the Historical Society meticulously collects and preserves a treasure trove of local artifacts. These curated exhibits offer a captivating journey through time, from Fostoria’s humble beginnings to its significant contributions to the region.

The story of the Fostoria Area Historical Society began in 1973 when it was incorporated as a non-profit organization. Shortly after, they acquired a prime location – the old City Hall at 121-123 West North Street. With numerous volunteers’ dedication, the building’s first floor was transformed into a museum space. By the time the United States celebrated its Bicentennial in 1976, the Fostoria Area Historical Society was already showcasing a remarkable collection of artifacts.

A source of particular pride for the Society is a 1941 Seagraves Ladder Pumper Fire Truck, a tangible reminder of Fostoria’s firefighting history, generously left behind by the Fostoria Fire Department when they moved to a new facility.

The Fostoria Area Historical Society’s commitment extends beyond a single location. Today, they manage three distinct museums, each offering a unique perspective on the city’s past:

The Fostoria Museum (123 W. North St.) serves as the main branch, housing a comprehensive collection of Fostoria-related artifacts and exhibits.

Foster’s Museum (105 N. Main St.) focuses on the life and legacy of Fostoria’s namesake, Ohio Governor Charles Foster.

The History Corner (corner of North Main and West North Street) is a flexible space for hosting special events and exhibits, further enriching the visitor experience.

The Fostoria Area Historical Society transcends the traditional role of a museum. Through engaging exhibits, educational programs, and community events, they foster a love of local history in residents and visitors of all ages. Their dedication ensures that the stories and experiences that shaped Fostoria are preserved, actively explored, and appreciated.
